Veterinarian

Evette · Central Maryland

Present

I am delighted to be working as a relief veterinarian in several local small animal hospitals where I provide critical services to pets and their people and the hospitals themselves when they're short-staffed or their permanent doctor is on leave. I focus on both preventive care for healthy animals and addressing health concerns as they arise. During exams for all patients I take the time to identify and discuss problems that had gone undetected or were not yet addressed. I take a 'whole animal' approach in which I seek to understand all aspects of the pet's life, including behavior, home environment, nutrition and exercise, in addition to any physically evident symptoms. Only by doing so, can I partner with the pet parent to devise a course of action that works best for them and their pet.

I am finding retirement to be much more exciting and fulfilling than I ever imagined! I am engaged in several volunteer activities. Here are a few of them: Animal Rescue: I began in pet rescue in 1989 and since then have fostered countless homeless dogs and cats until they found their permanent, loving homes. Since 2000, I've volunteered with the Partnership for Animal Welfare. As a vet, I also advocate for animal welfare legislation in MD. Environmental hands-on, educational outreach, and advocacy: * Yards Alive!, Columbia, MD: I'm a core member of this group that encourages people to convert their yards, patios and balconies to native plant communities, thereby providing habitat for native wildlife and reducing polluted run-off into our streams. * Master Watershed Steward with the Howard County Watershed Stewards Academy: As volunteers, we help homeowners address their stormwater problems and educate kids and adults why and how to keep the rain where it falls, and thus prevent run-of…

Veterinary Medical Officer

U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service · Riverdale, MD

USDA APHIS regulates plant and animal health (via international and interstate movements) and genetically modified plants, enforces animal welfare laws, and manages conflicts between people and wildlife. I have worked as a risk analyst, policy adviser, in environmental compliance and as a supervisor of a technical staff. I have represented APHIS to many interagency groups in areas of jurisdictional overlap such as invasive species, climate change adaptation, environmental justice and food safety. While understanding the specifics of a broad array of technical disciplines, I contribute a 'big picture' perspective that allows staffs to see the broader context of their work and its relevance to public policy and societal values.

Veterinary Medical Officer

Associate Veterinarian

Mt. Carmel Animal Hospital · Hereford, MD

Practiced medicine in a small animal hospital in a semi-rural area of North-Central Maryland. Duties included performance of preventive care (e.g., well-pet exams, vaccines, counseling on nutrition and behavior), surgery, and diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of orthopedic, dermatologic, dental, ophthalmic, and internal medical disorders. I worked with clients to provide them with suitable options for the care of their pet, including support in end-of life decision-making. In addition to small animals, I also treated raptors and reptiles in the care of Scales and Tails, a State-funded wildlife rescue organization.
