Gained experience in a high-volume animal shelter. Performed multiple spays and neuters in cats and dogs of all ages and practiced different surgical approaches in the surgery department. Performed common procedures in the in-take department for preparation of new animals upon arrival to the shelter such as blood draws, deworming, microchip scanning, heart worm tests, snap tests, vaccination. Performed regular procedures at the walk-in clinic and assisted the doctors in evaluating cases and diagnosis such as preparing ear cytolgies and skin scrapes, performing physical exams, vaccinating, microchipping, nail trimming, medicating, deworming, cleaning ears, blood draws, and CBC/Chem.

Collaborated with the two wildlife veterinarians to evaluate and check up on the animals at the reserve. Learned about common African wildlife, its behavior, and about the appropriate veterinary techniques. Observed and assisted the veterinarian during many of these wildlife specific procedures. Learned about the most commonly used drugs in wildlife medicine. Took blood samples and gave antidote to zebra. Auscultated the heart and monitored wildebeest during the veterinarians’ physical exams. Took stool and blood samples as well as gave vitamin IM injections to impala. Monitored all patients during and after being sedated. Learned how to use a dart gun for sedation.
