For this internship, I developed an on-farm protocol to identify piglets and nursery age pigs that may potentially have influenza. The pigs were tested using an on-farm influenza test kit and submitted samples for PCR testing. Results from the on-farm test kit were compared to the PCR results to determine sensitivity and specificity. I was introduced to the larger scale production system and how the veterinarian is utilized throughout the entire system, from sow farm to processing plant.
