I’m Ross Massimiano, DVM —a veterinarian, ER clinician, and hospital builder with a passion for shaping the future of veterinary medicine. I’ve led hospital growth from both the clinical and strategic sides—first as an Area Medical Director at THRIVE Affordable Vet Care, and most recently as the Talent Director for the Western U.S. at VEG, where I helped scale emergency care access and build high-performing veterinary teams across the region. Now, I’ve returned to clinical practice at VEG, re-engaging with emergency medicine while continuing to mentor colleagues, support hospital development, and explore what’s next for our profession. I’m also the creator of Vet to the Future—a weekly newsletter exploring how innovation, AI, and emerging technologies are transforming veterinary care. Alongside my clinical work, I consult with startups and fellow creators who are building the future of animal health, offering insight at the intersection of medicine, technology, and team building.

The voices of practicing clinical veterinarians to assist in evaluating and developing innovative solutions to bring to market for the companion vet. As part of the VAC team, I regularly attended VAC meetings and participated in prompt replies to surveys regarding new products for the veterinary market. I was part of the council for two years, from 6/2018 - 6/2020.

Relief veterinarians provide services on an as-needed basis when full-time vets are away from their practice (often due to situations such as illness, maternity leave, family obligations, or a scheduled vacation). They also may be hired to assist with the clinic’s caseload during high volume periods. A relief vet must be able to adapt quickly to a clinic’s culture and work with unfamiliar staff members and clients. They must also be willing to perform any duties required by the clinic including general exams and scheduled surgeries. Other routine duties often include taking radiographs, prescribing medications, updating medical records, and advising clients on post-operative care.
