I trained as an engineer before becoming a doctor. People assume this makes me a technology enthusiast in medicine. It actually makes me a skeptic. Engineers learn that complex systems fail in unexpected ways. That the elegant solution is usually the simplest one that works. Human biology is more complex than any system I encountered in engineering, and our understanding of it is far less complete. This shapes how I practice. I founded My Doctor Medical Group in San Francisco because I wanted a different kind of physician-patient relationship. When you pay me directly, I work for you. Not for an insurance company, not for a hospital system, not for shareholders. The word for this is fiduciary. It's surprisingly rare in American healthcare. My family has practiced medicine across three generations, starting with battlefield surgeons in both World Wars. The through-line is healthy skepticism of overtreatment.
