We are in a watershed moment in American healthcare. Because of the changes brought about by the Affordable Care Act, people are paying out-of-pocket for more and more of their healthcare expenses. That means they are seeking value and quality in healthcare. I am a family doctor. I went to medical school dreaming of someday becoming the general practitioner of old, a doctor known by his patients over years, easily accessible, and placing the focus on the doctor/patient relationship. But the healthcare environment of today makes delivering on this vision increasingly difficult. I am building a new Direct Primary Care practice in Lancaster, PA, called CovenantMD, opening in January 2016. Direct Primary Care is a low-cost, innovative answer to the current challenges in healthcare. In Direct Primary Care, patients contract directly with their doctor with no insurance go-between.
