Their purpose is to: -Ensure the humane treatment of animals covered by the Animal Welfare Act -Eliminate soring and promote fair competition at events covered by the Horse Protection Act -Provide national leadership on the safety and well-being of pets and other animals in disasters As a VMO for APHIS's Animal Care Agency, I performed animal welfare inspections at federally registered research facilities and licensed animal exhibitors. Assessments of animal health and husbandry practices, programs of veterinary care, and physical facilities were conducted to ensure compliance with the Animal Welfare Act. Reports were authored to identify incidences of non-compliance, and recommendations were made to bring licensees and registered facilities into full compliance.
