I worked with the Communicable Disease team at the Polk County Health Department in order to complete my MPH. My duties consisted of creating handouts for animal health workers, law enforcement, and the general public about rabies safety. The document for the general public was also written in Spanish. Additionally, I conducted a web-based survey of the domestic animal population in Polk County to determine zoonotic vulnerabilities in the county. The report I made was released as an internal document for the health department.

Government Veterinary Extern

I shadowed several different Veterinary Medical Officers in the National Import Export Services as well as the Surveillance, Preparedness and Response Services divisions in the Frankfort, Kentucky office. I participated in health certificate validations for the international export of horses, cattle, dogs, cats, and chicks. I accompanied both VMOs and Animal Health Technicians on isolation inspections and van seals. I also learned about policies and product certificates required for the export of animal products. I was also present on stockyard facility inspections and equine semen storage facility inspections.
