Senior Capstone Breast Cancer Research: What I did: Optimized protocol to determine how a repressor protein, TLE3, represses aggressive phenotypes in breast cancer cells, performed experiments using Western blotting and immunofluorescence staining on EMT and epithelial markers Why: Wanted to know what the current state of breast cancer research is because my mom had breast cancer What I learned: Differences in protein markers between aggressive and non-aggressive breast cancer, how to Western blot and IF stain samples, keep an organized journal, create and present a research poster We believe that TLE3 is highly expressed in the less aggressive breast cancers and functions to repress genes that are associated with tumor aggressiveness. Thus, we hypothesize that high TLE3 expression in tumors is a good thing. However, TLE3's mechanisms are still unknown as to how it affects aggressive breast cancer.
Pangolin Endocrine Researcher

What I did: Analyzed hormone cycles of pangolins, pandas, sea otters, and other zoo animals using ELISA, optimized protocol to extract P4 and estrogen from female pangolins, assisted veterinarian during baboon spay and neuter surgeries, drew blood, cryopreserved sperm, assisted zookeepers to prepare food and clean enclosures, trained zoo animals to be unafraid of needles using clickers Why: To see how research is done in another country's zoo compared to the US What I learned: How important spaying/neutering animals and saving endangered species is, how different cultures affect their style of work
