Student Assistant: Drug Content
Veterinary Information Network · Davis, California, United States
Edited and contributed to content for the VIN veterinary drug handbook. Consulted literature and updated drug monographs with information on adverse effects, dosages, and other information. Worked together with a team of students and veterinarians to quality check content.
University Representative
GE Healthcare · Davis, CA
Built relationships with university researchers and staff. Identified new researchers within the university community and identified major laboratory projects that are relevant to GE products and services. Distributed product specific literature, promotional materials and product samples to appropriate laboratories to support lead generation. Provided ideas and feedback leading to initiatives that would be productive to drive GE products within the university program. Developed an understanding of GE products and services to be a strong resource for the university. Developed an understanding of the research methods and applications where GE products are used.
Veterinary Assistant
Harbor Animal Hospital · Torrance, CA
Collected patient histories and vital signs during appointments. Performed patient restraint, phlebotomy, cystocentesis, vaccination, and treatment administration. Assisted with diagnostic imaging, surgery, anesthesia, laboratory diagnostics, and maintaining patient records using Avimark software. Worked with a wide variety species including dogs, cats, rabbits, rodents, ferrets, domestic birds, tortoises, and wild raptors.
Boehringer Ingelheim Veterinary Scholar
UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine · Davis, CA
Worked with Dr. Derek Cissell in the J.D Wheat Veterinary Orthopedic Research Laboratory. This study characterized changes in articular cartilage composition in a bovine ex vivo mechanical model of early cartilage injury. Proton MAS NMR was used to assess cartilage degradation by measuring spectral peaks of different biomarkers associated with cartilage extracellular matrix. Changes in composition were confirmed by mechanical testing and biochemical assays. Mentored a Junior STAR student from Davis Senior High School. Funded by Boehringer Ingelheim Veterinary Scholars Program. Supported by UC Davis STAR (Students Training in Advanced Research) program. Presented a poster at the National Veterinary Scholars Symposium (2018) and PacVet Conference (2019).
Research Technician
Byersdorfer Lab at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh · Greater Pittsburgh Area
Helped define T cell metabolic pathways which cause graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) using mouse models and genetically modified donor cells. Determined genotypes of mice using PCR, gel electrophoresis, and flow cytometry. Performed routine animal care. Isolated DNA, RNA, and lymphocytes from rodent and human blood. Performed immunoassays for specific metabolic and immune proteins. Attempted to clone AMPK gamma 2 subunit into lentiviral vector to study antileukemic effects and GVHD suppression in mice and human cells. Trained new lab technician in basic lab protocols used above.
Coordinating Tutor
Carnegie Mellon University · Greater Pittsburgh Area
Tutored large groups of students in chemistry, statistics, and calculus. Helped individual students through standing appointments. Co-led workshop to train new chemistry tutors. As coordinating tutor, managed the study space, greeted students, monitored tutor and student attendance, and provided information about tutoring services. College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certified.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Carnegie Mellon University · Greater Pittsburgh Area
Designed, synthesized, and purified molecules to be used as photocatalysts with alternative energy applications such as use in dye-sensitized solar cells, photolytic water splitting, and biomolecule dehydrogenation. Worked to synthesize x-ray contrast agent to be tested in mice. Characterized molecules by proton NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Prepared detailed research reports and adapted literature protocols to new experimental procedures.

CD19 antigen is an important transmembrane glycoprotein found in all B cells. It has been shown to play a significant role in cell signaling in the immune system, mediating between the humoral, antigen-induced, and tolerance induction mechanisms of immune response. Cloned extracellular portions of human and mouse CD19 molecules into mammalian expression vector. Selected positive clones by colony PCR and verified by DNA sequencing. Used recombinant DNA in transfection of human embryonic kidney 293 cells. Purified expressed CD19 protein using affinity chromatography. Protein to be used as a drug target in antibody therapy discovery studies.
