This position is the yang to the research yin of my professional life--the big picture, or where the rubber meets the road. Research is very much minuscule, detailed, calculated. Medicine is the sum of the parts, often messy, chaotic, multifactorial. In emergency medicine, you never know what you are going to get on a shift. From the nail trim on the ferocious cat at 3 a.m. to the massively hemorrhaging hit-by-car disaster...anything and everything is possible.

Exosomes are little lipid-dense aggregates of insanity, carrying messages of mayhem back and forth between cancer cells. Though only 200 microns in size, they occupy most of my waking, research-focused moments. What messages do they transmit, like clandestine notes passed between hormonal high schoolers, up-regulating strife in the life of the tumor micro-environment? Are they friend or foe to the goal of cancer destruction, with their teasing immunogenic heat shock proteins splashed across film after western blot film and proteomic profiles? And finally, as is the question behind most human motivations--how can we extort these mysterious membranous formations to live longer, more crowded lives as we fight the good fight for total global overpopulation?
