Large Animal Emergency and Critical Care Team
UTCVM- University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine · Knoxville, Tennessee, United States
As an ECC team member, I work with a diverse team of clinicians, clinical students, and experienced technicians in the large animal hospital to treat farm animals and equine patients. Typically working graveyard shifts, priorities include triage, stabilization, and essential diagnostics. I am privileged to work at an hour where more time can be dedicated to practicing suturing, ultrasound imaging, neonatal care, treating colic patients, interpreting blood work, and gaining confidence while working with large animals.
Animal Care Intern
Appalachian Bear Rescue · Townsend, Tennessee, United States
Appalachian Bear Rescue sets a high bar for wildlife conservation and rehabilitation. As an intern, I learned about wildlife protocols and entities within Tennessee, such as TWRA, and interstate cooperation. My main duties surrounded husbandry and medical care. All bears receive a preliminary exam at UTCVM, and UTCVM clinicians address any further medical concerns. I was able to accompany bears to the hospital after receiving them from wildlife services. Husbandry responsibilities included diet prep, environmental biosecurity, enrichment, and monitoring behaviors and skills that qualify bears for release. Unlike animal care, I had the unique opportunity to connect with the public and draw attention to the organization's conservation goals through art. I started a new tradition of painting pawprints for each new bear of the season. Pawprints are auctioned off to raise money for the organization. I found joy in this creative outlet, and the outcome of raising funds for the most deserving…

Conservators Center · Burlington, North Carolina
The Conservator's Center is home to 85 animals, most of whom are felids. As an animal care intern, I provided care to all of the animal residents. Responsibilities included diet preparation, cleaning and maintaining all enclosures, providing enrichment, and observing and monitoring for abnormal medical issues and behaviors. Diet preparation was a large project every morning and from this part of the animal care routine, I became very familiar will processing various types of whole prey. Most of the animals are obligate carnivores and were fed a mixture of whole prey, slab meat variations, and even pieces are large game. The animals that were not obligate carnivores such as the Binturongs, were fed ground beef and slab meat, a variety of different fruits, and a variety of vegetables. Enrichment is always present in enclosures, but new weekly enrichment was designed and implemented by interns. Enrichment targeted the skills and interests of each individual animal. Examples of enrichment…
